World Wine Production

Total world table and wine grape production exceeds 69 million tonnes, with grapes grown across 7.06 million hectares in over 90 different countries. The top ten countries produce around half of this total.

Western Europe produces more than half the world's wine and is responsible for 70% of all exports. However, "New World" wine production – from the USA, Australia, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa - has increased dramatically over the last 20 years.

Worldwide wine consumption declined from over 28,000 million litres in 1980 to 20,000 million liters by the mid-90s. The past 10 years however, consumption is again increasing and has risen by 10% to more than 22,000 million liters. Most of this increase is in USA, Canada and Asia; consumption is also decreasing in the traditional wine producing countries of France, Italy and Spain.
