AdBlue is a simple and non-hazardous product. However, there are some clear rules to follow when using the solution because it is used with an SCR catalyst that is extremely sensitive to impurities.
It is essential to prevent AdBlue contamination to ensure your SCR system functions correctly, and also to avoid expensive repair costs. For optimum performance of your vehicle (large goods vehicle, tractor, light goods vehicle, van, bus, coach, car…), never add anything to your AdBlue as even the addition of water could damage the catalyst in your SCR system.
Do's |
Dont's |
- Always pour AdBlue into the AdBlue tank. Both the nozzle pistol and filler cap of the tank are clearly marked
- Ensure diesel is never filled into the AdBlue tank
- Only use AdBlue equipment when storing or refilling AdBlue
- Keep your AdBlue equipment clean and free from dust or dirt
- Ensure your AdBlue tank and container seals remain and intact
- Use demineralised water (or AdBlue) when cleaning internally or priming AdBlue equipment
- Protect against misuse by not mixing with tap water, fuel, oil or other liquids
- Wear protective clothing if you are handling large quantities of AdBlue with the risk of a spill
- If you spill AdBlue on the ground, in a vehicle or on a painted surface, rinse thoroughly with water
- Protect from extreme temperatures. AdBlue freezes at an ambient temperature of 12˚F or -11˚C
- Gently warm the container to melt the AdBlue if it freezes in its storage container. AdBlue can be used again, once thawed, as it returns to its original state
- Keep your AdBlue out of direct sunlight
- Store below an ambient temperature of 30˚C as AdBlue can start to decompose
- Chill your AdBlue container if it becomes over heated by spraying the sealed container with water

- Do not fill AdBlue into the diesel tank
- Do not fill diesel into the AdBlue tank
- Do not fill the AdBlue tank with water or any other liquid
- Do not mix AdBlue with other liquids – it is not an additive
- Do not use AdBlue if contaminated with tap water or other substances such as diesel fuel
- Avoid spilling AdBlue on the ground as the surface may become slippery or the concrete or brickwork could be effected
- Do not leave spilt AdBlue unwashed
- Do not operate your vehicle without AdBlue. It is illegal to do so, and will result in extra downtime
- Do not use other substances other then AdBlue eg Urea Solutions. Costly damage may occur in the SCR system
- Do not over-ride the system as this may affect your warranty, it is illegal and may also put your vehicle into a “limp home type” mode
- Do not use dirty equipment, such as funnels, jugs or oil containers for refilling AdBlue
- Do not store AdBlue in direct sunlight
