More maize is produced per annum than any other grain crop. Around 850 million tonnes of grain maize is produced from around 162 million ha, at an average yield of 5.2t/ha.
Most of the grain maize crop is grown in the USA and China, which produce 37 and 21% of the world total, respectively. The three leading exporters of maize are USA, Argentina and Brazil. Between them they exported just over 70 million tonnes of maize in 2010. Mexico is the second largest importer taking maize from both the USA and Argentina.
USA is also a leading producer of forage maize with 2.6 million ha – but this area is less than 10% of that of grain maize.
The EUs 27 countries produce silage maize across approximately 5 million ha every year and has a similar area dedicated to grain maize. Germany and France are the leading forage maize producers.
