Role of Zinc in Melon Production

Zinc is involved in a range of enzyme reactions for energy production.

It is important for the development and function of growth regulators (e.g. auxin) that influence stem elongation and leaf expansion.

Zinc effect at growth stages

Zinc deficiencies in melon

New growth is adversely affected with internodes shortened and leaf size reduced. The new leaves are   compressed into a rosette shape. Older leaves show initially yellowish-green interveinal chlorosis which later turns yellow or yellowish-white. The veins initially retain their green borders. The chlorosis is not as uniform as with manganese deficiency. Few flowers form and they are often sterile. Crop maturity is delayed.
